Las bacterias que se alimentan de plástico impulsan el creciente negocio de la biorremediación

16/10/2024 - Un estudio reciente resalta el potencial de las bacterias que consumen plástico para impulsar el negocio de la biorremediación, que utiliza organismos vivos para eliminar contaminantes del medio ambiente. La empresa francesa Carbios ha desarrollado un proceso innovador que recicla botellas de plástico PET mediante enzimas microbianas, lo que ha atraído inversiones significativas. Se prevé que el mercado de la biorremediación crezca en $8.29 mil millones entre 2023 y 2028. Los científicos están explorando diversas estrategias, como el uso de biofilms, para aumentar la eficacia de las enzimas en la degradación del plástico. Además, se están desarrollando nuevas enzimas a través de biología sintética y metagenómica, lo cual abre oportunidades no solo para abordar la contaminación plástica, sino también otros contaminantes peligrosos como los PFAS.
